Where We Serve

The Missionary Oblates are blessed with many and varied gifts, talents and skills and they bring their God-given talents to bear in a wide variety of ministries.  Yet they all pursue the same mission and goal – to serve God by serving those most in need.  Here are but a few examples of their life-saving ministries.

The “Milk Babies” of Zambia

Nutritional and medical programs are almost non-existent in some of the poorest regions of Zambia.  Infants are at the greatest risk.  The Oblates have created a program in which 60 Zambian infants are provided milk every day to improve their chances of survival.  Many of these infants lost their mothers during childbirth and would have no other way to receive milk without the program.

Pope John Paul II Institution – Ouanaminthe, Haiti

The Oblates created Pope John Paul II Institution in the town of Ouanaminthe for refugee children who lost their homes in the earthquake of January, 2010.  They transformed the parish hall at Notre Dame de
l’ Assomption parish into a school that can accommodate up to 200 children.  The Oblates hope to build 12 new classrooms this year in order to educate even more refugee children.

China’s Little Flowers

The Oblates in China collaborate with an organization called China Little Flower, helping to extend the love of Christ to abandoned disabled children.  Every week a group of children come to the Oblate residence where they play games and watch movies while they learn about the Christian faith.

The Homeless Teach Oblate Scholastics

Oblate School of Theology (OST) in San Antonio, Texas partners with Haven for Hope, a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive services to homeless persons.  Students from OST provide spiritual guidance to Haven for Hope clients.  They work directly with homeless men and women to help them become self-sufficient.

 At Lebh Shomea House of Prayer, visitors are provided an opportunity for communion with God in silence and solitude within a vast ecological wilderness of astounding beauty and creative possibilities.  Guests of the retreat house in Sarita, Texas are afforded the support of a praying community and competent spiritual direction, together with the possibility of in-depth study and research in both Eastern and Western spirituality.

A Voice For the Voiceless

 For more than 50 years, Radio Pio XII has been broadcasting in support of miners who work in slave-like conditions high in the Andes Mountains of Bolivia.  The station speaks out against corruption by the government, mining companies and labor unions.  Radio Pio XII has been damaged by bombs many times through the years, and several Oblates have survived assassination attempts because of their outspoken support of human rights for Bolivia’s poor.
